We’re proud to have supported the development of the parametric trigger model underpinning a pioneering new flood insurance pilot launched this week by the Malawi Red Cross Society and Danish Red Cross. The initiative marks a milestone in building proof of concept for disaster risk financing within the Red Cross and in Malawi.

The Malawi Flood Insurance project is designed to provide rapid access to pre-arranged funds in the event of a severe flood, helping speed up humanitarian response and recovery. By linking pre-agreed financing to impact-based triggers, the initiative demonstrates how parametric insurance can make humanitarian funding faster, more predictable, and more sustainable.
Working with the Malawi Red Cross Society and Danish Red Cross, JBA developed the flood risk analysis and parametric trigger model that define the conditions under which payouts are released. This work builds on JBA’s extensive experience in flood modelling, disaster risk financing, and anticipatory action.
Project partners include African Risk Capacity Ltd., InsuResilience Solutions Fund, and the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Together, the consortium is strengthening preparedness by linking risk, plans, and finance in one integrated approach.
“JBA has greatly valued the collaboration with our partners on the implementation of disaster risk financing in Malawi. Through this co-development, we have been able to apply JBA’s market-leading flood-risk analytics to the needs of local stakeholders. This type of pre-arranged, risk-informed financing offers the possibility of bridging the insurance protection gap.”
