One year of JBA Global Resilience

Our first year as JBA Global Resilience has been shaped by partnership and global collaboration. Here, Dr Mark Lawless, Managing Director, reflects on the progress we’ve made together.

A year of global collaboration

As we mark one year since launching JBA Global Resilience, I’m proud to reflect on what has been a remarkable year of partnership and impact.

In the last 12 months, we’ve collaborated across continents, co-designing solutions with governments, international and local partners and working alongside development agencies and humanitarian organisations. Our work has ranged from strategic investment planning in Peru, to community led resilience programmes in Burundi, to dam safety assessments in Kazakhstan, and nature-based solutions across the Pacific Islands. Together, these projects highlight both the diversity of climate and disaster risk challenges, and opportunities our partners face and the importance of tailoring our support to local contexts.

Strengthening anticipatory action and financing

This year has also seen us deepen our contribution to anticipatory action and disaster risk financing. Working with Start Network in Pakistan, we helped translate flood impact forecasts into early action, unlocking £500,000 in prearranged financing so communities and responders could act before floodwaters peaked.

In Malawi, we supported the Malawi Red Cross Society and the Danish Red Cross to codevelop a parametric trigger model for a disaster relief insurance product, supporting faster and more reliable emergency support during severe flooding. These partnerships sit at the heart of our impact, helping communities better understand and manage risk amid increasing climate pressures.

Growing our team and global presence

Our team has grown too. As I write this from our Brisbane office, it’s a privilege to spend time with our newest team member, Andrew Magee, our Asia Pacific Lead – another step in strengthening our global presence. Expanding our expertise across regions is enabling us to deliver increasingly innovative approaches and respond more effectively to complex challenges. This growth reflects the trust our clients place in us and our shared commitment to building a safer, more resilient future.

The year ahead

Looking ahead, we remain focused on deepening partnerships, supporting innovation and continuing to make a positive difference globally. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this first year. Here’s to building even greater resilience together.
